As the shinkansen grew ever closer to Kyoto, in turn my chest grew steadily heavier.

That familiar scenery slipped by through the window; and as I gazed out my heart couldn't quite keep up with it. I should have been looking forward to this, and I sat there nervous and, somehow, a little sad.

Living in Kyoto had been my dream since I from when I was about twelve or so. I had always dreamed of living in that city amoung those old wooden houses and narrow streets. Then that dream came true, and in the time I spent living there, and working at Sticks Coffe, Kyoto quietly turned from a city I longed for into the place I came home to.

But the time came for me to leave. That city that had been my 'home' suddenly wasn't anymore. While my head understood that just fine, it just didn't sit right in my heart.

Perhaps that's why, sitting on the train bound for Kyoto, I kept feeling like I had become someone with no real connection to this place at all. Not really a tourist, not a resident. In a sense, not fitting into any category; belonging nowhere. A stranger. When I stepped off at Kyoto Station, I wasn't entirely sure I had the right to be there.

Then, as I walked down the street where I used to live, and I noticed the cracks in the paint on the road were still there, in exactly the same place and shapes. After the rain, the puddles had gathered in exactly the same places they always had.

Tiny things. The sort of thing you or I would never really think twice about. But seeing them, the weight on my shoulders suddently felt lighter. All the time I was away, the city had simply gone on being itself.

I pushed aside the noren and slid open the door to Sticks for the first time in a year.

Everyone's faces, turning to greet me. The moment I stepped up to the counter, my hands started moving on their own. The sound of the grinder, the smell rising up as the water was poured over coffee. The regular customers ordering the same drink as always. As we all started talking together it felt as though we were just carrying on from yesterday.

In fact, it had been a whole year since my last shift, since I last stood face to face with everyone. Yet, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had been standing there the day before.

That was when I finally understood that I really never needed to worry about coming back at all.

There will always be a place for me here. Whether I leave, or return, or leave again, I don't think that will change.

And even when I am away, part of my heart will always be settled somewhere here. Listening to the Kamogawa murmuring as its currents rush past, gazing out over the blue, blue mountains beyond. That version of me is always here, somewhere.

I'll be back again soon. When I am, please come say hello across the counter.
